Seeking A Friend for the End of the World

Surprisingly cute little movie. To me anyway. Don’t think it’s for everyone.

Even liked the oldie music for the movie. I don’t normally pay too much attention to the songs of a movie or I should say, they don’t usually catch my attention. But I do like the ones in this one.

Spoiler below. You are warned.

Steve Carell and Kiera Knightley. Quite an unusual pair, in my opinion. But somehow they made it quite cute.

And their world did actually ended. That surprised me a little. The premise was that the last human attempt to avoid some extraterrestrial object (I can’t rmb what it is exactly) to impact the earth has failed and they are on the count down stage to the end of the earth. So I kept thinking that the earth will somehow miraculously survived. Maybe the astronomers calculated the trajectory wrong or the object was deflected by some other ‘natural’ ways or something like that. But no, their world actually ended and that was the end of the movie.

Steve Carell and Kiear Knightley did end up as a pair of lover at the end. Maybe the world did have to end in the movie cos their love are really based on the fact that the world is ending. It is all beautiful and romantic and all but if they actually survived, their love may just die with time and that probably won’t make a very good story.

Another thing I like about the movie is that, most of the ppl are nice.  Sure, there’re quite a few crazies due to the end of the world that they gone nuts on drugs and sex and stuff. But nobody was really mean to other ppl. And Steve Carell’s character is just unbelievably nice and good that you can’t help but love him.

Kiera Knightley isn’t as beautiful as she once was. She’s been trying to rise above the “I’m just a beautiful girl” thing and wanted to be taken seriously as an actress so she’s not trying to be the pretty vase in quite a few of her movies. And her character here doesn’t need to be beautiful anyway cos she’s a bit of a screw up and a druggie. I personally think that her beauty peaked at Love Actually.  Not bad in Pirates either. But man, super gorgeous and sweet in Love Actually, even tho she only had a tiny little role in that movie. It’s almost worth it to see that movie just to watch her being all beautiful and wonderful. Red lips Anyway,  離題了.

The Death of Mark Darcy

They killed him in the 3rd book of the Bridget Jones series.

I can’t believe it.Disappointed smile

Well… first, I didn’t know that there was gonna be a 3rd book.

Second, I didn’t want Darcy to die.Crying face

He’s the whole reason I liked the movie and actually read the first book.

I am sad and upset and I am sure there’re a lot of us feeling the same out there.

I understand why the author had to do that cos there isn’t much to write about if Bridget and Darcy are just happily ever after. In a way, it is “necessary” to kill him to shake things up a bit.

But… it’s Darcy… The perfect guy… who would love Bridget “just the way you are”. And now he’s dead…

I think I need to watch the movie again to mourn for the loss.

In another sense tho, I guess he’ll remain the perfect guy forever now that he’s dead.

旋風腿

That’s the name of a short film that 子華 made and was shown during his last show 洗燥。Actually, I think this is one of the few things of the show that actually 同洗燥貼題.

I’m having this post because he’s going to post this film on fb (I think it’s fb) so that ppl who didn’t go to his show can see it as well. It’s gonna be on Oct 15!

I love the fact that 劉青雲 and 黎耀祥 were 客串 in the film, especially黎耀祥 cos I didn’t know that they are friends. Kinda surprised to see him shows up in the film.

The thing I don’t like about the film is how the lady who’s supposed to be the fiancee ran away when he’s in trouble and how she comes back when he became the ‘hero’ (and it’s such a short term thing too this hero. If it’s real life, ppl will have forgotten about him within a week). 這樣能共富貴,不能共患難的女人,值得你去娶嗎??

But anyway, the film is going to be made available soon. Don’t miss it!! Open-mouthed smile

Skyfall

I know 我很 out, 而家先講 Skyfall.

Pierce Brosnan is _the_ Bond that I know of since I know that Bond is. He’s ok, but I don’t really care much about it. I would watch it if it’s shown on TV and if there’s nothing else to do but I don’t have any particular desire to watch those movies.

To me, Bond is more of an ideal in my brain without any particular images attached to it. To me, Bond is cool, with cool gadgets. And good looking. And chill. Doesn’t really do much fighting.

That’s why when I first saw Casino Royale (my 1st Bond movie in the theatre), I didn’t really like it much cos it’s not what I was expecting. No gadgets, too much hands-on fighting. And I really don’t see why all the people raved about Daniel Craig emerging out of the water, topless.

Also saw Quantum in theatre. It’s ok but again, doesn’t excite me much. Only went bcos someone else wanted to go.

Actually made the extra effort to go see Skyfall. When I finally managed to go, it’s almost 落畫, only a few theatres in my area were still showing it. Heard good things about it. Went in with quite an expectation and to my surprise, it didn’t disappoint me.

Loved the way how they mixed the new and the old stuff – tech and old school gadgets. And the subtle but not too subtle humor. Also liked the plot that there’s no saving the world and nuclear bomb kind of bad guy. Just an insane psycho seeking personal revenge (frankly, I’m quite tired of all these saving-the-world-from-nuclear/bio-weapon and zombie-taking-over-the-world plots).

And I could finally put a face to the vague, imagined Bond in my head. I thought Daniel Craig did a very good job this time. Admittedly, there were a few scenes that the way he stands were too pretentious, almost like Andy Lau standing on the roof in 無間道, for the sake of looking all cool and stuff. But surprisingly, this time, 我好buy喎. Maybe I’m just a sucker of pretentious guy. haha…

Anyway, I’m loving Daniel Craig recently because of Skyfall. Altho I’m still not a big fan of his topless scene in Casino Royale. Maybe I have to watch it again. Maybe I will change my opinion this time.

Liked the theme song a lot as well. Thought it fits the mood and the theme of the movie very well. But whether it deserves an Oscar, compared to the other competitors, 我有少少保留.

The Rum Diary

Watched it simply bcos Johnny Depp’s in it.

The movie was … um… uneventful.

If you are looking for good guy fighting bad guy, big time romance or any sort of things like that, you are not going to find it in this movie. True, there’re elements of good and bad, and some romance. But if you are the kind of person who wants to see to the end of these, again, not this movie.

As some of the reviews I’ve read before watching the movie, the plot doesn’t seem to go anywhere. Most of the review I’ve read were negative, so I didn’t really expect anything but watching Johnny Depp.

The ending was quite sudden tho. I was watching the moive in bits and pieces here and there. So I didn’t realized that I was almost finished. And then all of a sudden, THE END. I was like “huh??? What happened???”

But then after a few minutes, I actually kinda like the ending. I like the feel of it. Kinda sad but there’s also hope and possibility. I don’t know how to describe it. It’s the ‘feeling’ of it that I like. A bit 滄桑但又有點瀟洒. I wouldn’t say that I like this movie but I certainly don’t hate it like some of the reviewers. Sometimes, movies like that is more “real”. There’s no big explosion, no big conspiracy, no big drama, just the life of a dude with his friend/acquaintance. And life goes on after the little short adventure that they shared together.

Knight and Days

Knight and Days.

可說是很不錯喎,kinda a nice surprise. 我說的不錯是指它還蠻 entertaining 的。那 over the top, 打不死的特務,那在子彈橫飛仍扮有型咁行過去咀個女生,reminds me a little bit of those 痴痴哋既港產片。跟港產不同的哋方,是呢套誇張得黎但唔浮誇,恰到好處,令我發笑 instead of 破口大駡。

其中一個我不太喜歡的地方是很多的scene 既 CG 都做得好明顯,個 background 超 fake 的,I'm not sure if they did it on purpose to make it extra cheesy or what, but it bothered me, a little bit.

Too bad that Tom Cruise is a bit crazy, 因為我都幾鐘意睇佢D戲。

Prince of Persia

Not a bad movie.
I liked the action sequence. Very exciting.

I didn't understand how the world didn't get destroyed tho at the end cos they broke the sand glass. Can someone enlighten me?

And I actually watched some of the special features on the DVD (I actually found a lot of those 'special features' a waste of time to watch... I usually only look for the gag reel). Turned out that they actually built a lot of the scene and with actual 林記, as opposed to use CG.

Old school, but I like it. :)

It's Complicated

Watched his movie a few weeks ago. I surprised myself by sorta liking this movie. 以一部由三‘老人’主演,沒有靚仔靚女的愛情趣劇來說,真是不錯。

I never liked Steve Martin cos all I know about him were those Cheaper by the Dozens and Pink Panther movies (some of which I haven't seen cos they seem very retarded). But as it turned out, he could be quite pleasant when he's acting normal.

Never really liked Alec Baldwin much either. Not that he's a very nice person in this movie but at least at the end, he made peace with Meryl Streep.

And Meryl Streep. The latest Oscar best actress. The first time that I noticed her was The Devil Wears Prada and her character wasn't too likeable. I saw Mama Mia next, mostly bcos of Colin Firth. I thought that Meryl Streep's portrayal of the character was a little too ... hrm... felt like she tried to be younger than she looked and too 含春. Didn't like it either... But then I watched Julie and Juliet and I liked her there. And then another movie, can't remember which one. The more I see her movies, the more I thought that she's a very versatile actress. Now this one. I don't think that I want to watch Iron Lady tho. Seems very boring. Not my cup of tea.

Tooth Fairy

Expected it to b a dumb and cheesy movie cos it's mostly a kid movie. But sometimes movie is merely for entertainment so dumb dumb地 is OK la.

Sometimes kids movie is nice. No swearing n nudity. I hv got to say, movie these days hv way too much nudity or sex scene that I sometimes feel like I was watching pron. O_o
Once again, bcos there was hardly any expectations on this movie, it was quite pleasant. Got a few good laugh out of it.

Even the weirdo fairy was likable. I was a little worried at first cos his name was Tracy. Luckily they didn't make him into one of those super gay guy. I found that lots of movies n TV shows these days hv one or two annoying sisi guys around. The weirdo fairy wasn't too weird either. He was basically a nice person.

The Rock always kinda amuses me. Not that i will go out of my way to watch his movies but when I do are them, I usually enjoy them.

The Road

A post apocalypse movie.
Certain scenes or idea really creeped me out.
But the movie wasn't particularly gd. Some of the things doesn't quite make sense.
And I also found it depressing. Although 詹占 and I thought that it hinted the world could b turning around at some point. But still, made me depressed.

月滿軒尼斯

Watched this on tv on sat. Not too bad, I guess, compared to those cheap 'HK' movie that uses Mainland actor n actresses who can't speak canto so they just dubbed over it but the dub work is so shitty that the 口形完全唔夾.

Like many other movies, I actually enjoyed the 配角 more than the 主角. 演阿媽的演一個八婆師奶演得入目三分,令我真的想dull把星她. But the one I like the most is 朱咪咪, I've always kinda like her. I usually see her in comedies n she makes me laugh. 估唔到今次做個正經既角色都得喎,俾到一個好慈祥既阿姨既感覺我,醫院o個一幕都做得好好。

But then the movie itself wasn't particularly good. That's the thing about hk movie. They are usually not that good when they try to b serious. They can b not bad but hardly considered as good. On the other hand, some of the silly movies bcos u know that it's no gd u ended up laughing at it so it might turn out to b quite entertaining.

The End of HP

Went to see the last installment of HP movie last Friday. Didn’t disappoint me wor.

One problem was that we ended up seeing the 3D version. I am not a big fan of 3D movies. It makes my eyes tired easily and I don’t see the appeal of it. I personally don’t think that the 3D effect adds too much to a movie, in most cases anyway. And it’s more expensive. I think that the whole 3D thing is just a gimmick so that they can charge ppl more $$.

Movie itself was gd. Most of the movie was just action tho so there was hardly any acting from Ron and Hermione, which is fine cos they aren’t that strong of an actor and actress anyway. haha…

I still liked Snape the best. The more complicated character in the series. Still dislike the fact that JR Rowling killed him off so quickly (although there’s still the memoirs afterwards). He could at least put up a bit of a fight. Oh well…

Saw some pictures of the 3 main characters from the first movie and their pictures now. Looked so different. I’m always kinda disappointed how non-cute Harry Potter is now as an adult.

The next movie that I want to see in the theatre is Sherlock Holms but I don’t know how mobile I will be at that point. May end up watching DVD instead.

Avatar

I know I’m very out but I finally watched the movie this weekend.

My expectation was quite low to start with so it was better than I expected. A pretty exciting movie for the most part.

I like that female pilot the best. Tough person, 又夠串, I like her!

Love Happens

Watched it last week. I’ve heard bad things about it before but since I kinda like both Jen A. and Aaron E., I decided to give it a shot. Worse comes to worse, it’s just a silly romantic comedy anyway. Wouldn’t be too bad.

To my surprise, it wasn’t as bad as I expected. It’s not spectacular but it’s not bad. Not the kind that I would like to watch again but it’s gd enough for a relax evening movie.

詹占 pointed out that there’s no sex scene in this movie and there was only one kiss at the end of the movie. Like an old school romantic comedy. I like it. Personally, a lot of the times, movies shows way too much skins that does not add anything to the plot. But somehow showing cleavage or sex scene seems to have become one of the standard elements in movies now. Sick.

I didn’t notice the lack of racy element in this movie until 詹占 pointed it out. I guess that’s probably how 潛移默化 works. You don’t really notice whether it’s there or not but if it’s there, you kinda just absorb what’s presented in front of you and accept that it’s the way it is without really thinking about it.

Come to think about it. My favorite romantic comedy didn’t have any sex scene either and there was also only one kiss at the end. Haha… me so 純情! wahahahaha…

Where The Wild Things Are

What a disappointing movie!

None of the characters in the movie is likable. This is the kind of movie that I don’t like. Everyone’s pretty much a jerk.

詹占 said that the original book wasn’t like that ga. We both hated the movie. Even though the book is a children’s book, it’s such NOT a kid movie. It’s all about conflicts and ppl/creatures getting upset and stuff.

One word to summarize it: AWFUL.

Julie & Julia

Hv heard gd things about the movie and finally watched it on about a month ago. OK wor. Quite enjoyable. I personally like the Julia part better cos the Julie part is a little frustrating sometimes.

Watching the movie made my mouth watered. Wanna eat/cook some French food!

Meryl Streep’s part was a pleasant surprised. The first time I noticed that was in The Devil Wears Prada. Needless to say, that movie didn’t make me like her too much. The 2nd movie was Mama Mia. Didn’t like it too much either. Her interpretation of the character was not my cup of tea law. Felt too 做作. It might not all be her fault. It could be the problem of the director also. I watched Mama Mia for Colin Firth anyway so it doesn’t really matter.

But in Julie & Julia, Meryl Streep surprised me. I didn’t really know who Julia Child was so 詹占 found me some old clips on YouTube. Turned out that Meryl Streep did a very very gd Julia Child impersonation. The way she talked and the way she moved.

I personally didn’t care too much about Julie’s side of the story. I found Julia a lot more interesting.

Another point to note is that the guy who played Julia’s husband, Paul Child, was also in The Devil Wears Prada. I looked up his name, Stanley Tucci. In Devil, he played a SUPER gay fashion designer. I liked both of his characters in the two movies, which is funny, cos I usually dislike those SUPER gay fashion designers. I’m not homophobic but I just don’t understand how come those ppl always have to be _that_ gay. There’re lots of gay guy out there who doesn’t have those sisi gestures and attitude. Even girls do not act like that. I’m longing to see some male fashion designer who is not gay or at least does not act gay.

Anyway, off topic. The point is, somehow Stanley Tucci was able to portrait characters that I normally dislike into someone that I actually kinda like. Good job man, good job.

It’s pretty refreshing to watch a good 小品 type movie without all those special effects and crime fighting and ppl dying. More human, less magic. I like it.

Slumdog

Watched Slumdog Millionaire on Sunday night. I’ve heard that it’s gd and that I actually had rented the disc for a long time (from one of those places that don’t have a due date for the DVD) but I had to make sure that I was in the mood to watch that kind of movie so I have been putting it off for a while.

I thought that it’s the kind of movie that’s deep and might even be painful to watch but to my surprise, it wasn’t. I actually quite enjoyed it. I especially thought that the Indian boy who played the main character’s childhood was cute. Actually, I find those little Indian boys very cute but for some reason, most of them will turn out to be some rather non-cute adults. There’re exceptions of course. Hrm… now that I’m thinking about it, I guess it’s not just Indian that has this issue. Most kids are quite cute to start with and then most of them turned into un-cute adults eventually. I believe that it is a global issue, instead of a national one.

The Life of David Gale

Intelligent movie. Cleverly mixed political view into a movie without making boring. Exciting thriller. Well done indeed. Casting was great, too. Kevin Spacey, Kate Winslet. Double K. (OK, I know I'm lame...) They did a really good job. Very convincing. Well... actually everyone on the cast did a great job. Oh and nice twist of the plot.

Kate Winslet was a surprising gd actress. I know she had been nominated in Oscar multiple times and happened to win one just now (I can assure you that I didn't know that she's in the movie before I saw it) but I somehow always thought that she's only a girl with pretty face. Probably bcos the only movie I recognized her in is Titanic. I really like her in this David movie.

One thing though, every time I watch movie that is set in Texas, it just reminds me of how much I hate the Texas accent. I think that's part of the reason y I don't like Matthew McConaughey, besides the fact that I think he always seems like such a cocky person. One of the character in the movie had heavy Texas accent. Drove me nuts. And the cowboy, oh man... I don't mind cowboys in western movies. But having cowboys in modern days seems so weird...

Beyond the Sea

Watched this movie last night. Quite gd. Well... I've always like Kevin Spacey. Liked most of his movies. He can play serial killer, singer, foulmouth husband, cop, teacher, mid-life crisis man, villain, and even alien. I think he's a very talented actor. Not good-looking or anything, just talented, and I like him.

Somewhere beyond the sea,
Somewhere, waiting for me,
My lover stands on golden sands
And watches the ships that go sailing;

Somewhere beyond the sea,
He's (She's) there watching for me.
If I could fly like birds on high,
Then straight to his (her) arms I'd go sailing.

It's far beyond a star,
It's near beyond the moon,
I know beyond a doubt
My heart will lead me there soon.

We'll meet beyond the shore,
We'll kiss just as before.
Happy we'll be beyond the sea,
And never again I'll go sailing!
