Annoyed

The way I watch FIFA is to time my gym time at work to roughly the match I want to see. I can only see part of a match this way because I can’t take that much time working out during office hour but it’s better than nothing.

Guess I’m not the only one who does it. The gym is usually empty at those hours in the afternoon (I don’t go at regular time. Just whenever work is slow so I can sneak away) but when there’s a game, ppl will show up.

The thing is, some of these ppl I have never seen in the gym before. And most of these ppl don’t even pretend that they are there for the workout. There are a few types of ppl who show up:

  1. Ppl who come down in their dress pants and dress shoes, simply standing right in front of the TV to watch the game.
  2. Ppl who pretend to be working out or stretching. Some hold on to a dumbbell or some other equipment but they really are just taking up the equipment and not really moving. Some of them really just treat the exercise bench as a chair for them to sit to watch TV.  最頂癮的是那些 chinese dudes, who just do the 轉腰 (like those 晨運客 in the park). They probably think that they are stretching, Thumbs up
  3. Some uses the stationary bike or the elliptical.  Almost look like they are working out but the ‘workout’ intensity, I suspect, is no more than, say, walk to the washroom for a pee.
  4. Most of the above are men. There are also a couple ignorance ladies who came but know nothing about soccer. I am not talking about the technicality of 越位 but one of them still thinks that Beckham is still in the UK national team… And they do not know how long is the game or anything. They really just came down to comment on the 靚仔 and to chat up the other ppl in the gym. Altho, to give them some credits, these ladies do actually do some exercise while watching and they work a little harder than Group 3 above.
  5. Ppl who are regulars and simply switched their time of workout to game time.

Annoyed

聾gar?!Steaming mad

I kinda understand the regulars cos they have budgeted the time for workouts anyway. But what about those that I don’t know even know if they have the gym membership?

Neth vs Chile.Soccer ball

Thumbs up

我蠻like Neth 的,主因係佢哋好橙好耀眼既球衣,哈,其次是我個人覺得佢哋通常都頗主動的,通常 resulting in a pretty exciting game to watch.

Be right back 可能是因為是偷來的吧...

Disappointed smile

Thinking smile

Edit:

詹占 sent me this after I shared the above with him. Some of the older clips of this guy. The writer of the article is pretty funny, too, I found.

FIFA 2014

Finally watched my first match on Monday.  It’s good that I’m in NA, not HK that I don’t have to stay up at night to watch the matches but then the matches happens during working hours so I need to to somehow sneak off in order to watch.

I was bad. I turned on the live stream at the corner of one of my monitor to watch Germany vs Portugal.  To my disappointment Portugal lost 4:0. But it' was kinda nice that I did manage to see two of the goals. Nothing spectacular tho.

Also watched most of Brazil vs Mex on Tuesday in the gym at the basement of the office (more to say about some other time). Brazil 搞乜? I used to be a Brazil fan, But they disappointed me again and again and I have kinda given up on them… I still would like to see them do well tho.

Didn’t watch any yesterday. Was planning to but then work got super ultra busy so I can’t get away.

Planning to see England vs Uruguay this afternoon. I’ll see if I have time. It could be the end of England if they don’t deliver. Well… I guess same to Uruguay.

None of the game I’ve watch was particularly exciting so far tho.

Speaking of unspectacular game, this is truly spectacular: Rolling on the floor laughing

Winter Olympics

Due to the fact that I sneaked away to jog on the track mill around lunch hour twice a week recently, I actually ended up watching more winter Olympics this year than I normally would.

As a HK-born person, I have always rooted for China during Olympics time (because there’s not many HK athletes to root for). But now I am also a Canadian, so I have another country that deserves my loyalty.

Luckily this is Winter Olympics, I haven’t watched anything that has a Chinese and Canadian athlete against each other. Sure, there are events that there’re both Chinese and Canadian competitors but they were not in the same heat, at least they weren’t for the the races that I’ve watched. So I could cheer for both.

It’s nice that the Chinese are stronger for summer events while the Canadians are stronger for winter events. I am not sure which country I would go for if they are directly competing against each other.

A dilemma of duel-citizenship.

Another note on the Olympics. I am never really a huge fan of figure skating. I mean, I do admire how the skaters can move with such ease on ice, going backwards and forwards and all the spinning and jumping. And I will never understand how come they don’t get dizzy from all those spinning. But still, not a big fan. But I happened to catch the men’s freestyle figure skate award ceremony (or what was it called? Flower ceremony cos they were only presented with the bouquet right after the competition). Anyway, what I wanted to say is that have you seen the Japanese guy?!?!?

He looks like straight from those manga comic books! I seriously wonder if he has undergone plastic surgery!!Eye rolling smile

Upcoming Race

In less than 2 weeks. Triathlon. It’s actually the only race I’ve signed up this year. All the others weren’t races. This will also be the last race/course thing that I’m doing this year. After this, there’s only trips (Scot and camping).

Sigh…Sad smile I’m so NOT in shape for it. I trained a lot less than I would like to, mainly due to the fact that 小J goes to bed too late that by the time he’s asleep, I want to sleep as well.

Anyway, altho I’m not very prepared so as race day approaches,

Just hope that I won’t have a heart attack during the race.

It’s gonna be a busy weekend. Race in the morning, potential highland game in the afternoon and nephew’s birthday dinner in the evening. And then still have to drive home from Guelph. Sunday worship, sunday school, youth fellowship and then potential meet up with 詹占's frd visiting from Calgary.

Trying to see if I could squeeze a few jogging or even swimming session between now and next Sat but my timetable is looking grim.

I was hoping to do better than a few years ago in terms of finishing time but I seriously doubt that I will even come closed. Sigh…Sad smile

On a separate note, there are something called “Triathlon Swim-Bike” category. What the heck? I can understand the Bike-Run one cos it’s called “duathlon”. But how come Swim-Bike is called Triathlon?? Isn’t ‘Tri’ means 3??? Where’s the 3rd thing? Disappointed smile

In fact, swim-bike is even less ‘tri’ than the bike-run duathlon cos the bike-run is actually ‘run-bike-run’, whereas the swim-bike is purely ‘swim-bike’.

I honestly don’t understand this new category. It feels like it’s for ppl who want to tell others that they are doing a triathlon but don’t actually want to do one. I myself has never been a running person but I’m still doing all three. That’s part of the challenge, no? Why take the easy way out? Why don’t just go for a swim or a bike ride? All in or all out, 做乜咁唔三唔四? If it’s for ppl who are not sure if they can finish but just want to try it out, there’s already a category called “Give-it-a-Tri”. It’s basically a shortened version of the triathlon. So I really don’t understand why is there a swim-bike category.  Duathlon, I can sorta understand. Maybe some ppl can’t swim. At least they are substituting the swim with a run. But this swim-bike category simply cut off the run portion. I really don’t understand the reason behind this. Confused smile

Tough Mudder–Completed

Another thing I have completed recently is the Tough Mudder (TM). It was actually done in May. I just haven’t got a chance to write it down.

As mentioned in my previous post, it’s an obstacle course, not a race. It’s something that’s The course itself was very very cool. Unfortunately, my experience could have been a lot better if my teammates could be a little more …. hrm… tough…

Basically, there were 4 of us in a team. One (A) is a personal trainer and she has always been super fit ever since I’ve known her. Another one (B) is a marathoner. She does marathons every year. I don’t actually know her. She was brought into the team by person (C), whom I know from ultimate and she has never been very fit. But C is actually the person who put the team together. She’s actually the one who found out abt TM and asked ppl to do it with her.

First of all, (C) didn’t get herself trained up as much as she promised and as much as she needs to. She’s completely out of shape man. Not even funny. I thought she would work herself harder bcos she’s the one who wanted to do TM in the first place.

The obstacle course was on a ski hill resort, which involves going up and down the slope multiple times (10+ miles) with various obstacles (about 20) in between. She couldn’t even run/jog up the first slope and started walking. Unbelievable. I know it’s 致在參與 but at least show some effort. At first I thought that she’s just saving for the rest of the course, didn’t want to wear herself out too soon but throughout the course, she went slower and slower and slower.

And then person (B) skipped a whole bunch of obstacles. She skipped pretty much all of the water-related ones. I have to admit that it was a cold day (around 11 degrees and we were high up in the ski hill and it was a relatively windy day) for water-related obstacles. But isn’t Tough Mudder about being tough and pushing your own limit and fear and to complete the course no matter what?? If you are to skip like half of the obstacles, why bother participating in the first place??? In fact, she skipped more than just the water-related ones.

The fact that it was such a cold day and bcos of all the water-related obstacles, we were constantly freezing. What made it A LOT worse is that we have to wait for (B) and (C) all the time. They were so slow. Me and (A) were walking between obstacles too after a while (cos it’s not worth it to try to jog since the other two were not jogging) but somehow they were like snails. We walked up to the next obstacles and looked back, they were no where to be seen and we often had to wait for at least 5-10 min before they show up. All the stopping really doesn’t help to warm up my body. And even worse, my muscles cooled down every time and had to start up again.

And at a few obstacles, me and (A) would just go once the two of them arrived cos both of us couldn’t wait to get moving and continue. But after we finished, we would still see the two of them on the other side of the obstacles debating whether to skip it or not. They looked at how other ppl did it for like 5-10 min and then most of the time, they decided that they were to skip that obstacles. So basically, me and (A) had to wait for them to watch other ppl (while we were soaking wet if it’s a water-related obstacle) and then they ended up not going in. Like, holy fxxk Steaming mad, do it or skip it, just make a freaking decision nice and quick so we can all press on. Pissed me off. Steaming mad

More than one time, me and (A) wanted to just ditch them to continue at our own pace. But in the face of the word “team work”, we waited for them again and again. But honestly, we were not doing it ‘together’ anyway. We went at our own pace but only waited for them at each obstacles.

The average time to complete the course is 3 hours. I know we were not going to make the average time even before we start. I was thinking about 4, or maybe 5 hours max. And guess how long it ended up taking us????

FREAKING 7.5 HOURS!!!!Steaming madSteaming madSteaming madSteaming mad

So basically, I was freezing cold for 7+ hours. It just made the whole experience NOT enjoyable. The two of them were probably warmer than us cos they have a lot less stop time and they didn’t get into the water as many times as we did.

To say that I was annoyed and pissed was an understatement. There’s simply no freaking way that I am going to do anything like that with the two of them again, unless they can demonstrate that they are completely fit and mentally ready for it.

And another thing that kinda pisses me is that they called themselves a finisher of TM. Oh my goodness, they did about only half of the obstacles and they considered that as finished?!?!? You’ve got to be kidding me. Shameless! Baring teeth smile

I mean, there’re other ppl who were skipping obstacles, too. I don’t know many those ppl skipped but I think it’s quite hard to beat the two of them and their snail speed.

On the bright Sunside tho , there were a lot of cool people on the course. Adventurous and nice people. Some of them not necessarily 100% fit (it’s not like I was 100% fit either) but they are willing to push their own limit and to get it done. Also there were some really strong guys ready to give other ppl a hand even tho we were not their team.

One of the best obstacles was the “wounded warrior” one. It’s an obstacle that you have to carry a person from one end to an other as if he/she is an injured solider (oh ya, the whole TM thing is to raise fund of wounded solider and their family). When (A) and I arrived at that obstacle, two big guys came over and asked if they could carry us. I was a bit hesitant in the beginning cos I am a lot heavier than I look. But (A) was going for it, so I was, too.

To my surprise Surprised smile, my guy picked me up over his shoulder with me hanging down (like the picture below) and had no problem and walked very nice and steady on the mud. On the other hand, his buddy, who was carrying (A), slipped on the mud and he had to put (A) down to picked her up again.

image

Best and easiest obstacle ever! Rolling on the floor laughing LOL.

Talking to (A) after the obstacle (while waiting for (B) and (C) Baring teeth smile), I told (A) abt my concern of my heavy weight and (A) said that the two of them would be more than happy to take us cos I no doubt was a lot lighter than his muscular buddy. True. Be right back

And the Berlin wall. Much easier than I though. Did it in one go. Of course, there were tons of guys on top of the wall, ready to help us. As I said, lots of cool and helpful ppl out there.

The take-away from this experience is that:

Pick your teammate wisely for hard core events like TM.

After I signed up and before I did it, I thought that it’s one of those ‘been there, done that’ thing. But now that I look back, I almost want to do it again just to see how long it would actually take me and exactly how hard it is without having to stand around in the cold.

Well… if you are planning to do it, let me know. Maybe I’ll join you. Winking smile(well… you better be fit tho. LOL Rolling on the floor laughing)
